How to Clean Pine Pitch Off Your Car Step by Step Guide

Pine pitch, also known as tree sap, can be an unsightly and tough to remove substance from your vehicle. Left untreated, it could even damage its paint; but with proper techniques you can successfully eliminate it without harming surfaces such as paint.

Here is a detailed guide that can assist in this task.

Step by Step Guide

Step 1: Accumulating Materials Before getting started, gather all the required supplies:

  1. Microfiber cloths
  2. Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
  3. A plastic scraper (optional)
  4. Car wash soap
  5. Water
  6. Bug & tar remover (optional)
  7. Car wax or polish

Step 2: Soften Pine Pitch

In order to successfully remove pine pitch, it must first be softened before it can be successfully extracted from its location.

For best results, soften it by wetting or misting with water prior to removal and softening using microfiber cloths with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), plastic scraper (optional), car wash soap with water as the medium. Eventually you should be left with either bug & tar remover (optional) and car wax or polish (all optional).

Soften the Pine Pitch Pine pitch tends to harden as it dries; therefore before removal you should aim at softening it first before any serious attempts are made at removal.

Use Warm Water: Apply a dampened microfiber cloth soaked with warm water directly over the affected area for several minutes to loosen sap build-up and loosen its adhesive bonds. This should help release its buildup.
Isopropyl Alcohol: Soak a cloth in rubbing alcohol and gently apply it over the sap, waiting 30 to 1 minutes until the alcohol begins dissolving its sticky substances.

Step 3: Gently Scrape (if Necessary)

For stubborn sap spots, use a plastic scraper (such as an old credit card) to carefully lift away sap and then scrape at light pressure using alcohol to dissolve any remaining chunks. Be mindful not to forcefully scrape as this could damage paint surfaces and let alcohol do most of its job!

Step 4: Clean the Area

Once all sap has been eliminated, wash the affected area with car wash soap and water in order to eliminate any remaining traces. Use a soft cloth or sponge and ensure to rinse completely with fresh water afterwards.

Step 5: Reapply Car Wax or Polish

Once the area has been cleaned up, it’s advisable to reapply car wax or polish in order to protect the paint of your vehicle and restore its shine. Doing this helps preserve its value as well as keep the shine alive!

Additional Tips:

Bug & Tar Remover: For especially stubborn sap on your car, specialized bug & tar remover products available at most auto stores may help remove it more effectively. Don’t Wait too Long: As soon as sap builds up on your vehicle it becomes harder and harder to remove; attempt to clean it off as soon as you notice it for best results.

Avoid aggressive scrubbing: For optimal cleaning results, always employ gentle motions when cleaning to avoid damaging the car’s paint job.

Prevention

Parking under pine trees can result in sap accumulating on your car. To minimise this risk, whenever possible try parking in an open area away from trees in order to minimize sap buildup and use a car cover if parking near trees is unavoidable.
